Founded in 2002, they have become the largest independent charity evaluator in the United States. It is a 501(c)(3) organization that does not accept any advertising or donations from organizations it evaluates. They rank organizations from zero to four stars as they clearly report total income, expenditures, amount going into designated programs, and pay of top officials of over 8,000 large organizations in their data base. The key factors are financial health, accountability, and transparency. Many people refer to Charity Navigator before making decisions about which groups to support. Although this is not a perfect guide, it is a very good one, and many organizations on this website are happy to let potential supporters know if they get a good recommendation.
