When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor and Yourself

By Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert
Moody Publishers; 2009
ISBN 978-0-8024-5705-9 $14.95

This 120 page book was written by two staff members of the Chalmers Center for Economic Development (a Christian organization at Covenant College, Lookout Mountain, GA). It emphasizes how well-meaning people often do not prepare to meet their goals by first working with those whom they want to help and then suggests alternatives. One chapter tells about the huge amount of money spent annually on overseas short-term mission trips and suggests that those resources often might be better used in other ways.
