Since 1961, they have sought to prevent blindness and restore vision in the developing world. Over 172 million people on this planet are affected by blindness and preventable eye disease.

They note that four diseases are responsible for 80% of the world’s blindness: (1) cataract, (2) trachma, (3) onchocerias, and (4) childhood blindness. The IEF programs are preventative, educational, and surgical–if necessary. Their SightReach Surgical program helps provide quality low-cost equpment and supplies related to ophthalmology (especially for cataracts).

They do not send short-term mission teams from the U.S. but prefer to support overseas local eye care professionals in the countries where they help. Often local volunteers are involved with basic vision screening, dispensing eye care tablets, vitamin A capsules for children, basic nutrition education, and HIV/AIDS prevention education.

Along with their U.S. headquarters, they have field offices, representatives, and partners in several other countries. Much more information is on their website.
