Lifestraw is a brand of water filtration and purification devices. Developed by the Swiss firm of Vestergaard Frandsen (VF), they are actively working to make contaminated water safe for people in 64 developing nations. Their several kinds of filters can remove 99.9999% of water-borne bacteria. Currently serving millions in Kenya, elsewhere in Sub-Saharan Africa, and India, VF operates and maintains the Follow the Liters program. For each LifeStraw you purchase, one school child in a developing community receives safe drinking water for an entire school year. Some of the products commonly distributed are the LifeStraw Personal and the LifeStraw Family. The LifeStraw Personal is a small “straw” that can be worn around the user’s neck for point of use, filters bacteria and protozoa, up to 1,000 liters of contaminated water. LifeStraw Family is a gravity-filter that removes bacteria, protozoa, and viruses, and has a 5 liter bucket to hang in homes with a cleanable pre-filter to clean a minimum of 10,000 liters of water. TIME Magazine gave LifeStraw its “Invention of the Year” award in 2005.

See their website to learn more or to contact them for pricing and availability. LifeStraw is also available at some retail outlets and other sources you can find on the internet.
