The letters stand for Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity. VOSH/International began in 1981 and seeks to facilitate the provision of vision care worldwide to people who can neither afford nor obtain such care and works with World Health Organization to eliminate preventable blindness by the year 2020. VOSH has a great network for getting volunteers to overseas places that need eye care and for obtaining eyeglasses and equipment (often with support of Lions Clubs). Many VOSH chapters support overseas eye care mission trips, and the VOSH website also connects places with needs with volunteers in many fields of eye care (not only optometry).
