With a goal of “saving and improving lives in the world’s toughest places,” Mercy Corps helps people recover from disasters, build stronger communities, and find their own solutions to poverty. They provided over 2.2 billion dollars in assistance to people in 119 countries since 1979. Currently they are helping in more than 40 countries.
They focus on agriculture and food, children and youth, conflict management, disaster preparedness, economic opportunity, education, emergency response, environment, health, innovations, water, and women and gender. See their website for more information.
Global Envision (www.globalenvision.org) is Mercy Corps’ blog about market solutions to poverty, explored through news, commentary, and discussion. One recent example was a story about developing a toilet that does not require plumbing.
