Since 1978, this unique Christian ministry has brought hope and healing through more than 580 port visits to developing and 18 developed countries. They have performed services valued at over one billion dollars. Their large floating hospital (the world’s largest non-governmental medical ship) contains five operating rooms and has provided approximately 82,000 free surgeries — many of which are very difficult, while off-ship dental and eye clinics address those needs. The ship also serves as a platform for training of African medical professionals. Mercy Ships volunteers (both medical and non-medical), representing over 40 countries, pay their own way to serve onboard. A term of service can be two weeks to many years. From college age through retirees, this could be an excellent opportunity for service. In 2021, Mercy Ships plans to add a second large hospital vessel.
