The letters S.O.I.L stand for Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods. Since 2006, they have been making a positive difference in one of the most serious health and ecological problems: how to deal with disposing human waste without harm to human beings, to the environment, and in a way that helps improve the land. One of their main programs has to do with effective composting toilets that do not require a sewer pipe discharge. This helps in the fight against cholera and other diseases. Recently they completed a campaign to plant over 10,000 trees in Haiti using compost fertilizer. Several major agencies are helping S.O.I.L. towards their goals. Although their focus is on Haiti, The SOIL Guide to EcoSan is available on the Resources section of their website. Over 500 people from over 50 countries have downloaded it with an interest of replicating SOIL’s projects around the world.
