Approximately 1.5 billion people do not have access to electricity, and 2/3rds of those in Sub-Saharan Africa are without it. That means major problems in medical care, education, agriculture, and many other concerns that people in more materially-advantaged societies seldom think about (unless their own elecrical power stops for a while). Although diesel or other fuel power is sometimes available, it can be expensive, cause environmental problems, and often lead to asthma and other medical concerns.

Since 1990, SELF has completed projects in more than 20 countries. Examples include application of solar power for drip irrigation in Benin (West Africa), health care in Haiti, telemedicine in the Amazon rain forest, online learning in South Africa, and microenterprise development in Nigeria. SELF says that Energy is a human right, and they have much more information on their website.
