Founded by some Rotary members in 2008, they note that air pollution from wood-powered indoor cooking stoves kills eight times as many people annually as malaria. Along with the four million premature deaths annually, these kinds of fires and stoves result in the emissions of more than one billion tons of greenhouse gasses and the deforestation and destruction of huge amounts of forest reserves every year.
Their solution is the Ecocina stove. It costs $50.00 (U.S. dollars), is built in Central American countries and used there and Mexico. Over 61,000 have been built, improving the lives of nearly 500,000 people.
